Odd things

For the first time in many moons, I grew rather angry about this whole Rubashkin saga. I had been taking all their troubles as a big joke, confidently eating their food and waiting for the day when they would once again rein supreme in Jewish food-dom. But now it appears the OU has become involved, threatening to take away their certification of Rubashkin products unless the Rubashkin family stops making those products. Basically, they're a bunch of weasels who are kicking the horse after it's been slain.
Now I'm not defending Rubashkin here. All right, I am. What do you want from me? Should I criticize the meat company that has always been there for me?

In other, better news, I learned a great Maamar this morning, Ki Imcha Haslicha 1949. In it the Friedriker Rebbe curses out sinners. Well, that's perhaps not a fair assessment. He curses out people who convince themselves that what they're doing is not bad. It's a pity that I don't have the Maamar in front of me, because the Rebbe of course says it a whole lot better than I do. Anyway, go learn it yourself, hopefully it'll inspire a little guilt, which I think is all we can expect from this generation.

Moving right along, I'm distressed to see that no one could come up with any ways to make vast amounts of money off my new Chumra scheme. Where have the great Jews gone? I thought Jews were supposed to be the masters and exploiters of the world? Have they really proven the lies false? Is Henry Ford wrong?

Now that we've finished with that particular episode, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Al Franken's only getting 65 percent of the vote in today's primary in Minnesota. He was supposed to get 90 percent. I actually voted for one of his opponents, Priscilla Lord-Faris, because I wasn't particularly interested in having him be my senator. Sure, Norm Coleman isn't perfect, but he's definitely preferable to someone who grew up in S. Louis Park.
And that, my friends, is all the news that is.

Did you see the piece on CNN.com today?

Just like a guy said...

No...post a link!

Uncool.

Just like a guy said...

Cool is as cool does. Anyway, interesting to see why they got all those counts.

Anonymous said...

Yup, that's what mama used to say.

Nemo said...

OU is getting involved because half the Rubashkin clan is getting indicted. I think OU doesn't have a choice at this stage.

"go learn out" = go learn (your brains) out? go learn (it) out(side)? what? i'm really trying here, dude.

Just like a guy said...

Try no longer- just a little typo, maam.

Cheerio said...

you disappoint me. i thought you were better than that!

Just like a guy said...

I know you think I'm perfect. And the truth is, I am. This is merely the exception that proves the rule.

Mottel said...

I don't think people have found time to implement your chumrah when we've just come out with a much better one -hechsheirim on music!

Just like a guy said...

More's the pity.

BTW, I finished that Mesechta.

Mottel said...

You up to a second one?

Just like a guy said...

Do any other Mesechtos also dedicate a whole chapter to hermaphrodites?

Cheerio said...

dude, post about that!

Just like a guy said...

The good news is, she's interested. The bad news is, she's interested in...what!?

Cheerio said...

it is intriguing, you must admit. and you forget, i come from the land of alternative sexuality. i NEED to know what to say.

Mottel said...

I'm sure, somewhere or other, yes.
Why not just segue into this YU "Ye-She-Va" bit too.

e said...

What's this ye-she-va bit? what are you talking about

Mottel said...

Do a search on the J-blogosphere. Suffice to say, a former professor there left like Adam and came back like, uh, Eve

Cheerio said...

hey, my roommate (who goes to stern) mentioned something about that!

Just like a guy said...

Good shtuff, huh? I always wished I took literature in college...

Mottel, is this Masechta thing strictly for bloggers, or are you soliciting the general public as well?

Mottel said...

It's for real people as well -though I'm surprised you're commenting here, as I thought you had my e-mail ;-)

Nemo said...

Just noticed I wasn't the only one and I thought I was seeing a trend.

Yo, I have your email, but since I'm already typing in this one box, I might as well finish with everything I have to say to you ...

Do you know how I can set a password on my wireless router so that I can be one of the millions of selfish pricks on my block that make all the poor students living here suffer by not letting them harmlessly use their internet?

Just like a guy said...

Don't do that Nemo. Be kind, gentle, nice.

Mottel said...

Get a WPA2 connection. I did a google search and found this guide -tell me if it works

Anonymous said...

Why would you want to do that to poor students, Nemo? How would you feel if you were that poor one?
For ONCE I agree with TRS, be nice,
make a block party, and tell everyone they can use your router...

Nemo said...

Um, because I was that person for three miserable weeks. No one felt bad for me. No one made me a block party.

You know what I did? I spent 3 weeks fighting Comcast bureaucracy and hold-lines, and now that I've prevailed, I have no sympathy for those that didn't support me.

Anonymous said...

You really are going downhill fast...aren't you?

e said...

Nemo, if everyone used that logic, children of Depression survivors would have to starve "because when I was your age, we had nothing to eat," children of immigrants form Europe should have to salt their own chickens "because when I was growing up, nobody salted out chickens for us," and colleges shouldn't give financial aid if the faculty didn't get financial aid when they were in school. Some of these examples are lame, but you get the point.

Break the cycle of negativity! Be change you are waiting for! Vote Barak and share your wifi!

Anonymous said...

Sorry to have to say this in public, but Nemo, you should seek out prof. help. Lots of anger buried deep inside.

Nemo said...

Your example miss out one important factor: progress.

If Barak wins, I won't need to share my wifi, because there won't be a home in America that doesn't have their own wifi.

e said...

What's progress got to do with it?

Nemo said...

Do you want the legal distinction between children and moochers?

Anonymous said...

True. My examples were lame. The point is that one needn't bergudge others what was begrudged him. What about random acts of goodness and kindness will help bring Moshiach

Anonymous said...

s.z.b. - :)
e.- dont bother, nemo extremly stubborn. and prehaps the evil one.

Nemo said...

Purely evil e.: even the law (my lifeblood) recognizes that there needs to be some lapse of time before one because totally and completely liable for the things they do in vengeance. Not sharing my wifi with others is forgivable at worst.

S.Z.B.: Now that's change we can believe in!

(Had that cliche at my fingertips and had to get it out somehow.)

Anonymous said...

Are you saying that the law recognizes that there's some amount of time that one is allowed to be vengeful? If so, so what. If the law recognizes it, doesn't make it right.

The bottom line is that the kids whom you are depriving of wifi are not the kids who deprived you of wifi. Don't be a bad neighbor.

Just like a guy said...

If Barack wins then we all get Wifi? He has my vote!

Nemo said...

E.: That logic is equivalent to saying that I should let my neighbors chill on my lawn, swim in my pool (I wish :), come in the middle of the night to make eggs, and sleep over when things are too noisy in the dorms.

I want privacy and the exclusive enjoyment of my property.

The law recognizes vengeance in hot blood, like if you find your best friend in the act of cavorting with your wife, you can [sometimes] use that as an excuse for why you shot them dead. Usually though, even a few minutes later is assumed to be enough time to get over the rage. It's usually left for the jury to decide. My lawyerly advice: don't kill anybody.

e said...

I poshut don't know how these things work. Do you lose anything when someone uses your wifi?

Anonymous said...

Nemo, just be nice. A person comes down for 70 80 years just to do a favor for another...
And if you will say they aren't Jewish, then how about making a Kidush Hahsem?

Just like a guy said...

A. Anyone else using your wifi will compete with you for bandwidth, and your internet will therefore be slower.

B. It's easier to be hacked into when your wifi is public.

Nemo said...

Do you lose something when they quietly make eggs in the other room while you're asleep and clean up after themselves?

Just like a guy said...

No, you don't. So, you opening up your internet to the masses?

e said...

Yes! It's called hezek r'iah. There's also a possibility that you'll get robbed with all these people traipsing in and out.

Just like a guy said...

The eggs?

e said...

What about the bloody eggs?

Anonymous said...

The kashrus?

Just like a guy said...

Something like that.

Anonymous said...

Does he live with goyims? What if they want bacon with their eggs in your pan??

Just like a guy said...

Hey, at least that would make the rest of the food made in the pan taste better.

Anonymous said...

How do you know? Have you ever tasted it?

Just like a guy said...

Not personally, but from what I've heard...

Anonymous said...

I remember reading soemwhere that Nemo said he fryed out at Uni. You think it's true or he's kidding?

Just like a guy said...

I think he's fried out in certain aspects, yes, much as I would say that I fried out over the summer, but not in any fundamental manner. Put it this way: Nemo is not eating bacon.

:`(

Just like a guy said...

Why, he's as frum as you, me, or your neighbor's kumquat tree!

Anonymous said...

a. How do you know how frum i am?
b. My neighbor ain't got a kumquat tree.
c. Their orange tree ain't that frum. And
d. It pains me so that part of my body (for we are all one) is not healthy.
Elul is here. One usually tries to go upward. If one doesn't go up then he goes down....
Very very sad.

And g'night, Shlaffen Shtunda for me.

Nemo said...

There are certain treif foods on my priority list to try. Bacon, or anything pig, isn't one of them.

I'm gonna start with Indian food!

Just like a guy said...

Anon-
A: Takeh.
B. No?
C. Really! How odd.
D. Yes, I suppose so.

Nemo: Tell me how it is when you try it.
